BORNEON SUN BEAR CONSERVATION CENTRE (BSBCC)
Sandakan, Sabah | Established 2008
Founded by renowned wildlife biologist Dr. Wong Siew Te in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department, Sabah Wildlife Department, and LEAP, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting the world’s smallest bear.
Located in Sandakan, the Centre provides rescued sun bears with a second chance at life through rehabilitation programmes while offering lifelong care for individuals unable to return to the wild.
Over nearly two decades, BSBCC has grown into a leading conservation and education hub, advancing public understanding of sun bears and their critical role within Borneo’s rainforest ecosystems.
Impact Highlights
- Rescue and rehabilitation of formerly captive sun bears across Sabah.
- Successful releases of rehabilitated individuals back into protected forest habitats.
- Ongoing care for non-releasable bears within enriched forest enclosures.
- Education programmes reaching thousands of visitors annually, strengthening conservation awareness.
Our Collaboration
Through private guided visits, travellers gain deeper insight into sun bear conservation challenges and successes. These experiences foster lasting awareness and directly support the Centre through adoption programmes, donations, and conservation-focused merchandise initiatives.
Why It Matters
BSBCC’s conservation approach extends beyond rescue alone. Its six pillars, animal welfare, rehabilitation, education, research, community conservation, and ecotourism, work together to address long-term threats facing sun bears. Future plans include expanded rehabilitation capacity, anti-poaching initiatives, human–bear conflict mitigation programmes, and enhanced visitor facilities designed to strengthen education and engagement.
