APE MALAYSIA
Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Sabah
APE Malaysia is a conservation social enterprise working at the intersection of habitat restoration, wildlife protection, and environmental education across Sabah’s Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. Through hands-on programmes, the organisation restores degraded landscapes while empowering local communities to play an active role in long-term conservation.
Impact Highlights
- Over 151,000 native trees planted to reconnect fragmented rainforest habitats.
• 85% survival rate achieved across restoration sites through long-term monitoring and maintenance.
• 66 acres of degraded land restored, strengthening wildlife corridors within the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Camera traps have recorded 40 wildlife species, demonstrating increasing biodiversity recovery.
Our Collaboration
Through this partnership, travellers directly support habitat restoration efforts that reconnect critical forest corridors used by orangutans, pygmy elephants, hornbills, sun bears, and other endangered wildlife. Community members are actively involved in planting and maintaining restoration sites, creating sustainable income opportunities alongside conservation outcomes.
Why It Matters
Tree planting does more than restore forests. It reconnects fragmented habitats, allowing wildlife to move safely between protected areas while strengthening ecosystem resilience. Long-term community stewardship ensures these forests continue to thrive well into the future.
